The purpose of this study was to examine how authors of African-American literature combine elements of gothic fiction, historical metafiction, magic realism and African-American culture to represent ghosts. These ghosts are symbols for the past of African-American slave experience and this will be analysed by drawing on three case studies, namely The Known World, John Henry Days and The Cattle Killing. In order to address this research question, my thesis consists of a long introductory chapter and three main parts in which I analyze each novel separately. The introductory chapter explains the origin of ghosts and haunting in African-American literature and consists of four subparts namely, African-American literature, history, gothic fiction and ghosts and magic realism. To concretize all the discussed elements in this chapter, the African-American novel Beloved by Toni Morrison functions as the example novel. The first part of the analysis starts with The Known World by Edward P. Jones. It outlines the importance of storytelling in order to remember and keep the dead alive and shows various instances of spirits inhabiting the world of the living. The second part explores John Henry Days by Colson whitehead. The legend of John Henry as well as characters functioning as a symbolical John Henry are discussed here. Further, the haunting effect of Talcott, Virginia on the main character will be thoroughly investigated. The third part analyzes The Cattle Killing by John Edgar Wideman. In this novel, storytelling is extremely important as a means to heal people but also as a means to remember the dead. Further the historic Xhosa Cattle Killing and ghostly characters are discussed. My thesis concludes that ghosts are indeed an indispensable part of African-American literature and that they are indeed a mixture of elements of gothic fiction, historical metafiction, magic realism and African-American culture. Ghosts are integrated not purely to represent the African-American slave experience but also African-American culture in general. The representation of ghosts in this kind of literature is a means to remember what has long been forgotten.
